In 2005 a few people at the Choctaw Church of Christ saw a food need in our community serving 16 families. We quickly outgrew working in the back of the church. We now own our own facility just across from the church, next to Choctaw Post Office. We are not associated with the church and have been incorporated and have our 501c3 not for profit status. With the aid of grants, gifts, donations, and fundraisers, we were able to build and pay for a 3,000 square foot building, with walk-in coolers and walk-in freezers and a fork lift to handle pallets of food.
With God’s direction we served over 42,000 people and distributed over 200 tons of food in 2012. At the end of last year we had 1,281 registered households. Thank goodness not all of them continue to need our assistance. Each January, households must re-register to update their information. In mid February 2013, there are already 531 households registered. 300 of those qualified for the poverty income level government assistance food program (USDA). We can only pray that their situations and lives improve so that we don’t have a job to do.
As of March 2015, the Choctaw Food Bank is serving an average of 400 individuals every week, and 10-20 newly registered households every week. In 2014 there were 1,322 households registered and this number increases yearly.
We have an all volunteer team of 15-20 people that dedicate their time every week. We serve anyone that says they are hungry each Wednesday from 11:00 to 6:00. We have received training to assist clients with SNAP applications (formerly food stamps).
Help us help others help themselves.
